Kale Stew

Print Friendly and PDF

This robustly green and nutritional plant is a common vegetable of the Black Sea Region in Turkey. I know this stew with corn flour since my childhood. It is cooked nearly everyday in the homes of the Black Sea. It can even be eaten at breakfast. I’ve been to many restaurants and I haven’t aeen any dish that gets anywhere near my homemade recipe. They are either tasteless or the colour is black. I say firstly fulfill my sight and then my tummy, and offer you my reipe of georgious green and 100 % natural Kale stew.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of kale
  • 1 small cup of corn wheat
  • 1 cup of fresh sweet corn (If you can’t get it fresh, canned sweet corn will also do)
  • 2 green peppers
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of salt

Directions

  1. Wash the kale leaves and seperate the stems with a knife. Chop the stems up into smalle pieces.
  2. In a stew pan saute the chopped up onions in olive oil for 2 minutes. For now pour 1.5 lt (7.5 cups) of boiling water onto the onions.
  3. Add the cracked corn, and then add corn flour slowly through a sieve.
  4. Add the chopped up stems to our mixture. We add the stems first beause the cook slower than the leaves. If we cook our leaves too long they turn black. That is why our stew’s colour is green.
  5. Cook for 10 minutes with mild heat. Then with the help of a fork check if the stems are cooked, it should be soft.
  6. Chop the leaves up, not too thin, and add to the pot. Throw in the peppers whole for taste.
If you like it hot add some red pepper flakes.
  7. Add some more boiled, the amount is up to you whether you like the temper thick or thin.
  8. Cook for 2 more minutes. Don’t forget to stir a few times or the kale will darken in colour.
  9. Now you can ask me “what about the sweet corn?” Add them 5 minutes before you put the stew off the fire.

You know the rest of the story. It’s the best part. Serve and eat with corn bread. You can add a teaspoon of butter to your dish, if you prefer the taste. And not to forget, take a picture if you a going to open a web site.

    Bon apetite!
